supervision faqs

**For informational purposes only. we are not representing the BACB.
**you should always make sure to follow the bacb guidelines with anything you do. standards change on a fairly regular basis and it is your responsibility to stay up to date.
What do I need to do to get started?
Prior to beginning supervision, the following must be completed:
1. Create a "GATEWAY" account on BACB.COM by clicking HERE.
2. Familiarize yourself with the "EXPERIENCE STANDARDS" found HERE. These are extremely important to know before getting started.
3. Start your coursework with a program endorsed by the BACB.
4. Obtain a supervisor. Make sure to confirm that the supervisor has completed the required 8 hour supervisor training.
6. Complete a supervision contract with your supervisor. this should include how your hours will be documented as well as expectations for the terms of the contract.
How does it all work?
Supervisory periods are 2 week periods.

In our program, require you to meet for at least one hour a week.

Supervision should include regular viewings of you/the Supervisee's work with the client as well as your regular therapy documentation.

THIS MAY ENTAIL AN ONSITE VISIT (IF YOU ARE IN MICHIGAN), A VIDEO RECORDING YOUR THERAPY SESSIONS, OR SCHEDULING TIME FOR US TO VIDEO CALL INTO YOUR SESSIONS TO VIEW THEM IN REAL TIME. SUPERVISION CANNOT BE DONE WITHOUT YOUR SUPERVISOR SEEING YOUR WORK.
How can my supervisor know how I am doing?
Seeing you in action and having regular dialogue is the best way to know whether or not you are understanding the principles o behavior as well as applying them properly.
How many hours are supervised?
Generally speaking , if you are working towards your BCBA, you need 1500 hours of "supervised independent fieldwork". More details about this can be found here.

If you are working towards your bcaba, you need 1000 hours of "supervised independent fieldwork". More details about this can be found here.
Do I need to work full time in ABA in order to complete my hours?
You must work for at least 20 hours a week in ABA in order for your time to count. This does not mean that every hour is supervised. Supervised time means that you have a supervisor who is working with you and meeting with you on a regular basis according to bacb standards.
Can all my hours be working directly with clients?
As described in the EXPERIENCE STANDARDS, only 50% of your hours can be direct work. The remaining supervision hours must be indirect hours. Indirect hours can include a variety of activities that are not direct services including writing behavior plans, treatment notes, transition summaries, and other forms of communication. We are fully equipped to help you through!
Is video supervision really allowed?
Yes! It is! It is obviously preferred to do everything in person, on site, but that is not always possible.

According to the bacb:
"Observation with Client Requirements. The trainee must be observed working with
a client in the natural environment during each supervisory period by at least one supervisor. In-person, on-site observation is preferred. However, the observation may be conducted using asynchronous (e.g., recorded video) or synchronous (e.g., live video conference) formats. "
What kind of documentation needs to happen?
There are several pieces of documentation that need to happen throughout supervision. The bacb lists all of them here: HTTPS://WWW.BACB.COM/EXPERIENCE-STANDARDS-MONTHLY-SYSTEM/

When you are a supervisee with us, we make sure to walk you through every step of the way. If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at supervision@thebehaviorguru.com.
